Did you know that one of Canada's most ambitious railway projects began right here in Cobourg?
The Cobourg and Peterborough Railway was chartered in 1852 and opened in 1854, becoming one of the first railway lines in Central Ontario. Its most remarkable feature was a massive 4-kilometre wooden bridge stretching across Rice Lake—at the time, one of the largest trestle bridges in the world!
Although the railway faced engineering challenges and eventually closed in 1898, it played an important role in connecting Cobourg's harbour to communities and industries further north, helping shape the growth of our region.
Today, you can visit the Cobourg and Peterborough Railway Historic Marker beside the Cobourg Marina and discover this fascinating piece of local history.
