10 Things to do in Cobourg this September

Summer may be winding down, but Cobourg's outdoor movie season isn't quite finished.

On Saturday, September 5, bring a lawn chair and blanket to Victoria Park for Movies Under the Stars: Hoppers. The movie begins at dusk, making it an easy way to spend an evening outside as summer gives way to fall.

Then on September 12, Movies Under the Stars gets a distinctly Cobourg twist with Min and Bill, the 1931 film starring Cobourg-born Hollywood legend Marie Dressler. The special screening takes place on the Esplanade and celebrates one of Cobourg's most famous connections to film history.

September brings the first real taste of fall to the countryside around Cobourg, and there are a couple of local stops worth adding to your autumn plans.

At Burnham Family Farm Market, the season is changing quickly. Apples, sweet corn, pumpkins, gourds and seasonal vegetables fill the market, while the bakery turns out pies, breads, buns and other homemade favourites. On weekends, visitors can also head into the orchard for pick-your-own apples and choose from more than 10 varieties. 

For another orchard experience, Moore Orchards offers pick-your-own apples when the crop is ready, along with fresh-pressed cider, pies and preserves.

Fill a basket with apples, pick up a fresh pie, bring home some cider and enjoy the countryside as the colours and flavours of fall begin to arrive.

And there's something wonderfully old-fashioned about starting a Saturday morning at the Cobourg Farmers' Market at Rotary Harbourfront Park.

One of the best things about using Cobourg as your home base is how easy it is to explore the rest of Northumberland County.

Take the Northumberland Vintage Show on September 12 in Roseneath. Make a weekend of it instead of just making a quick trip to the show.

Stay overnight in Cobourg, start your morning with coffee and breakfast downtown, then head north to Roseneath to browse the Vintage Show and spend some time exploring the community.

If you're visiting on a Sunday, add a stop at the Roseneath Carousel, a remarkable piece of Northumberland history. The 1906 C.W. Parker carousel features 40 beautifully carved basswood horses, two boats and a 1934 Wurlitzer Military Band Organ. It is open Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m., with rides available for $5.

Then take your time making your way back toward Cobourg.

The classic cars keep rolling into Cobourg on Friday nights in September, gathering at 727 William Street beside Big Boy Burgers. The 2026 season continues through September 25, from 6 p.m. until dusk.

Wander through the rows of cars, talk with the owners and take in the collection of classics, restorations and local favourites.

Located outside the downtown core, the Cruise-In is a great reminder that Cobourg's local experiences happen all across town. This is a relaxed Friday-night tradition built around cars, conversation, community and a good burger nearby.

Sometimes experience Cobourg means getting off the main street and finding where the locals gather.

If you like to walk, run, bike or simply be part of something bigger, September has plenty of reasons to lace up in Cobourg.

The month brings four community fundraising events, each with its own story and purpose.

On September 12, the T4T Walk to End Suicide brings the community together at the Cobourg Yacht Club to raise awareness, remember lives lost and support suicide prevention and survivor support in Northumberland County. The event includes a memorial walk, live music, community art, shared stories and food, making it much more than a walk.

The following day, September 13, is the Parkinson Canada SuperWalk in Cobourg. SuperWalk is Parkinson Canada's flagship fundraising event, bringing people together to raise awareness and support for people living with Parkinson's and their families. The Cobourg event is being held at 162 Church Street.

Then on September 20, the Terry Fox Run will take place in communities across Canada. Walk, run, ride or participate at your own pace while helping carry forward Terry's Marathon of Hope and supporting cancer research.

The month wraps up with Hike, Bike & Bark for Hospice on September 27, where you can hike, bike or bring your four-legged friend while raising funds to support compassionate hospice care in the community.

If you're coming to Cobourg for one of these events, don't rush home afterward. Grab breakfast downtown, explore the shops, walk the waterfront and stay for dinner. September is a pretty good month to make a day of it.

September is a beautiful time to play golf in Cobourg. At The Mill Golf Course, a round follows Cobourg Creek through the grounds of the historic mill, with the option to play nine or 18 holes. The public course remains open seven days a week through October.

But you don't have to leave when the clubs go back in the bag. The Mill Restaurant is housed in the beautifully restored mill, with dining overlooking the creek and course. The menu focuses on local ingredients, with a pub, patio and dining spaces that make the historic setting part of the experience.

For golfers, there's even a Golf & Dine package that combines nine holes, a power cart and a restaurant gift card.

This year's theme is “Storytelling through People,” with categories including waterfront and nature, heritage and architecture, events and community, people and places, the seasons and short-form video.

That could be a family enjoying the beach, friends exploring downtown, a quiet moment by the lake, a local event or simply people enjoying one of Cobourg's hidden corners.

There are five $250 local gift-card photography prizes, a $250 video prize and a $250 photography grand prize. The challenge is open to everyone, including visitors, and entries close at 5 p.m. on September 30, 2026.

September is a beautiful time to explore the countryside around Cobourg, and the Northumberland Hills Studio Tour offers a chance to see the work — and the spaces — of local artists.

On September 12 and 13, artists across Northumberland County open their studios to visitors, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the people and places behind the work. From painting and pottery to photography, sculpture and other creative disciplines, the tour is an invitation to explore beyond the gallery walls.

Back in Cobourg, continue exploring the area's stories at the Cobourg & Area Museum, where local history comes to life through collections, exhibits and stories connected to the community. 

You can also take a stroll along the waterfront and discover the Waterfront Wisdom Pathway.

And tucked inside Victoria Hall, the Art Gallery of Northumberland is an easy addition to a downtown/walking itinerary, particularly on a cooler or rainy September day.
