The Little Houses of Cobourg – A Beach Discovery
Cobourg’s shoreline is full of surprises — including tiny driftwood houses hidden along West Beach. Created by local artist Rod, these miniature pieces are part of The Little Houses of Cobourg, a growing project designed to spark curiosity and exploration. Keep an eye out during your next walk, snap a photo if you find one, and discover a small piece of creativity tucked into the waterfront.
Cobourg’s shoreline is known for its beautiful beaches and lakeside views, but if you look closely while walking along West Beach, you might spot something unexpected — tiny driftwood houses tucked along the sand and shoreline.
Created by local artist Rod, these miniature works of art are part of a growing project called “The Little Houses of Cobourg.” Each one is carefully crafted from pieces of driftwood Rod collects during his daily walks along the lake.
Rod has spent more than 20 years creating art, with nearly a decade dedicated to beach-inspired projects. His creative journey has evolved from painted rocks to fish sculptures and now to these charming driftwood houses.
Five of the houses exist so far, and one has already been placed at West Beach in Cobourg for visitors to discover.
Finding one is meant to be part of the adventure.
Beach walkers are encouraged to keep an eye out, snap a photo if they find one, and share their discovery using the hashtag #thelittlehousesofcobourg. Each find becomes a small moment of creativity and connection along the waterfront.
Rod hopes the project encourages people to explore Cobourg’s shoreline a little more closely.
His creativity can also be seen in other projects around the community. One of his most impressive works is a detailed landscape of Downtown Cobourg created to scale, capturing the character and layout of the historic downtown core through art.
“Art should inspire,” Rod says. “I want others to see my art and want to create something of their own.”
His driftwood houses are just one example of the creativity that can be found throughout Cobourg — sometimes hidden in plain sight along the beach.
